Ignoring what’s below the surface is what will ultimately undermine organizational transformation.
Change can difficult – be mindful of things below the organization’s surface! Changing organizational culture is one of the most difficult leadership challenges there is!
Watch out for:
We have always done it that way
That’s not the way we do things around here
We are different
Don’t boil the ocean
etc. etc.
These phrases and others like it typically refers to the complex, subtle practices that become ingrained in an organization’s culture, to the point where they become part of its identity.
Don’t underestimate how powerful these sentences are!
The hidden challenges of organizational change
Past success is no guarantee for the future, especially when the only constant is change
Habitual thoughts and behaviors are not bad in themselves; indeed, they are often the basis for what a company does well. But when circumstances shift or the company becomes dysfunctional, those habits may need substantive change.

I liked this – unfortunately most of this is true especially when you work in the US Intelligence Community. It still has a “Communities of Interest” (COI) and agencies, despite 9/11, still refuse to share information with each other. “We’ve always done it that way.”
This article should be read by a lot of business leaders. In doing business, you are not supposed to think that you’re just doing it for yourself. You should be doing it for your family and for the people that is working with you. Do not always mind about the organizational hierarchy. When it comes to decision making for the company, business leaders should let those of under the organization’s surface share their thoughts, theirs matters too.
To change or not to change – the point is: While you’re thinking about ” that’s the question “, it changed already with other X-factors!
In today’s complicated world we’re always striving by our endeavors to keep up our strengths as well as improving our weakness ( also of the organizations that we’re involved ) . Considering several threats, challenges, Global Economic Depression… all of us want change… hope for the best, of course!…but at the same time usually we’re afraid of “the new”, to assume risks ( unavoidable! ),…and obviously change will not come if the same is not started from the bottom line, reengineering, reinventing the business, recalculating through a deep Market Research, Swot Analysis,…definitely this is the biggest dilemma of nowadays.
Change is like the ocean currents or an old picture – you cannot stay at the same bottom line, even if you follow up trends and have strong conservative principle and is necessary at least to follow up Market trends… and be aware of threats and opportunities as well. A really good manager does not take credit for everything but instead let’s credit fall where it is due among his/her team. The value of an organization will be measured by its capability to change and competitive advantage depends on the ability to move quickly, decisively and efficiently in sensing, responding to and exploiting change in the business environment.
Commonly executives are consumed with strategy creation and execution and in pushing and driving business results – the more you understand the past and what really matters… the more promising will be the future
More than a belief… we must be updated, ready, prepared to transform our organizations and attitude is what it makes the difference between ordinary and extra-ordinary persons.
